Prof. Dr. Elena Makarova

Elena Makarova is Professor of Educational Sciences and Director of the Institute for Educational Sciences at the University of Basel. She also serves as a Fellow Board Member of the International Academy for Intercultural Research. Her research focuses on acculturation and school adjustment of minority youth, gender and career choices, and value transmission in family and school contexts. Makarova has led and contributed to numerous national and international research projects, including studies on gender-sensitive career guidance and education using digital tools and implicit gender biases in teaching. Her current projects include promoting gender-sensitive STEM role models in early education and leading the Swiss contribution to the European CAREER LEAD network on career guidance and education. Her work is published in leading educational journals and is funded by institutions such as the Swiss National Science Foundation and the Swiss Federal Office for Gender Equality.
