Joseph Cimpian, Ph.D. (Stanford University), is Professor of Economics and Education Policy at New York University. His research focuses on understanding and addressing social and educational inequities, with significant work on gender gaps in education. Dr. Cimpian’s gender gap research examines the social, institutional, and psychological factors influencing gender disparities in STEM and in other fields. His experimental studies have revealed biases against the mathematical abilities of girls and racial minorities, while his large-scale data analysis has shown how low-achieving men are disproportionately drawn to math-intensive college majors. His work has appeared in journals including Science, JAMA Pediatrics, and Child Development, and has been featured by the New York Times, the Washington Post, and Brookings. Dr. Cimpian has presented his research at top universities worldwide and at a U.S. Congressional briefing. He previously served as Chair of the Scholars and Advocates for Gender Equity committee for AERA and as an editor for Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis and a special issue editor for Educational Researcher.
